Back to the Track Night April 26, 2009: A 12th starting position in Sunday night’s Vault 35 Big Block Modified feature wasn’t about to slow down “The Hurricane” Steve Paine as he left a path of destruction behind him en route to collect the checkered flag at Cayuga County Fair Speedway.
Big Block Modified As the sun set over turn four during Sunday night’s lineup, the Big Block Modifieds pulled out for the Vault 35 as pole sitter Paul Hasbeck led the 16 car field around the 3/8 fast miler here in Weedsport, NY. At the drop of the green, Pete Taylor in the #6 car found his groove early to take a hold of the lead as Paul Hasbeck and James Friesen rounded out the top three. But as the laps began to fall, the action quickly heated up as Chad Phelps, the X-man, charged from a ninth place start to take the lead on lap 12 from Taylor. However, the X-man wasn’t the only man hitting all the right spots out on the track as Steve Paine aboard his #7x followed suit passing Taylor for second thanks to a fast lap time of 17.89 seconds. With half of the feature recorded in the books, only one question remained… Would Phelps be able to hold off the eye of the storm or would Paine finally get his vindication after spending the past few weeks in the Top Five? It seems Paine earlier decision to stay at his home track of Cayuga County Fair Speedway instead of heading to Big Diamond this Sunday paid off as an inside move around Phelps in turn two during lap 19, secured Paine his first victory here at Weedsport for the 2009 season. Top Five: Steve Paine, Chad Phelps, Chad Homan, James Friesen, and Pete Taylor. Sportsman ModifiedA caution thrown on the opening lap of the Sportsman Modified Bud Light 25 Feature rearranged the initial feature line up as pole sitter, AJ Kingsley would be relegated to the back of the field after getting turned around in turn four while under caution. As the green flag dropped, the #8L of Phil LaVare brought the boys down the front straightaway but Jeremy Pitcher would soon change that as an inside move exiting turn 2 would relegate LaVare to second best. From there it seemed Pitcher was on a fast track to victory lane as he continued to produce fast time after fast time despite the efforts of the #29 car of Steve Gray. Going into the 16th circuit, Gray used the entire track at his disposal as he made attempts to the outside lane as well as the inside, just looking for any room to take control of the lead from Pitcher. With every lap’s completion, the anticipation continued to build throughout the grandstands as fans watched the pair weave in and out of traffic, with Pitcher slowly putting distance between Gray and himself. As the checkered flag waved on the second feature of the 2009 season in the Sportsman Modified division, Jeremy Pitcher would sit a top the throne after a brilliant performance in the Bud Light 25. Top Five: Jeremy Pitcher, Steve Gray, James Spano, John Petrovicz, and Phil LaVare. Street Stock Pole sitter Nate Peckham experienced similar fate as AJ Kingsley in the Street Stock Hoosier Tire 20 feature, as a caution flag thrown on the opening lap sent Peckham to the rear of the pack. Dave Manise would assume the leader position with ease at the restart as Steve Crouse and Wayne Ellison found themselves in a battle for second at the conclusion of lap seven. Last week’s feature winner, Steve Crouse in the #02 found the move he was looking for, as the restart on lap 10 gave Crouse all the room he needed to secure the second spot from Ellison. After a yellow flag thrown on lap 15 sent the field into a single file restart, Manise and Crouse would quickly pull away from the field but with just five laps to go in the Hoosier Tire 20, history would not repeat itself for a second week in a row, as Dave Manise would take the checkered flag! BattleKarz The BattleKarz debuted a new look Sunday night as the men and women heading up the 12 fielded cars would go to battle twice before the night would be over in two separate 12 lap features. Bill Unger aboard the #711 seemed to have the car to beat tonight as he cruised into Victory Lane with ease; however, the second feature wouldn’t fare so well for Unger. As the green flag dropped on the night’s second BattleKarz feature, it was time for the Barb Amidon to show the boys how drive as she held off the efforts of both Bill Unger and Dave Nageldinger to win the 12-lap feature. Unger would be penalized two spots for a jump during the restart of lap 8 ending his night in fourth place, despite a second place finish. The overall winner for the night in the BattleKarz division would go to Dave Nageldinger in the 11x car.
