Weedsport, NY – Cayuga County Fair Speedway welcomed Australian modified driver Pete Britten to track on Sunday night but veteran driver Steve Paine wasn’t about to let the international man steal the spotlight quite yet as went head to head with track champion Alan Johnson for a thrilling finish in the Big Block Modified 35 lap feature.

Big Block Modifieds

After starting in the tenth position for Sunday night’s 35 lap feature, Steve Paine capitalized on the outside groove of the 3/8 miler to take the lead away from Shannon Whaley on lap eight coming out of turn four.

From there Paine continued to clear the field with each circuit’s passing putting up an astonishing four second lead between himself and the rest of the field by lap 14. A flat left rear tire on Paul Habeck’s #25 modified would erase the margin Paine had accumulated as a caution thrown one lap later sent the boys back to the line for a restart.

When action resumed, Paine picked up where he left off as defending track champion Alan Johnson jumped up into the top five after starting the night outside of the top ten positions. With six laps to go, a caution flag thrown sent Matt Sheppard to the pits for a flat right rear as the field goes back around for the restart.

When action resumed, Johnson jumped from fourth position to runner up in an instant as he looked to track down Steve Paine currently sitting in the top spot. As the two ricocheted around the ring the #7x of Paine began to slow down from his blistering pace as Johnson cut the lead to a half second with two to go.

However, the defending track champion wouldn’t get his man this time as Paine cleared the finish line for yet another win here at Cayuga County Fair Speedway. Top Five: Steve Paine, Alan Johnson, Jimmy Phelps, Billy Dunn, and Gary Tomkins

Sportsman Modifieds

In his first ever Sportsman Modified win Marcus Dinkins led a green to checkered flag feature despite the grave efforts of Dave Marcuccilli in the waning moments of the Gater Racing News 25 lap feature.

“I knew I had to do something for my mom for her birthday, because I forgot to buy her anything,” replied Dinkins when asked about his first win coming on his mom’s birthday today.

The #17 sponsored RUSH Racewear of Dinkins seemed to have shut down the advances of James Spano entering the halfway mark of the 25 lap feature, but as the #1 of Spano began to slow down the #M1 of Marcuccilli could only get faster!

With two to go, Marcuccilli used the cushion off of turns 3 and 4 to his advantage as he snatched the lead from the rookie Dinkins. However, the young gun wasn’t about to back off as he retook  the lead moments later heading into backstretch with only one more circuit to fall.

As Dinkins headed into turns three and four with the checkered flag in sight, Marcuccilli tried one last time for the lead, screaming around the outside groove hoping to gain enough momentum to clear the #17, but it was too much for the #M1 to handle as Marcuccilli hit the back wall giving Dinkins all the room he needed to take home the win. Top Five: Marcus Dinkins, James Spano, Tom Juhl, Steve Gray, and Rob Humphreys

Street Stocks

Coming off of Saturday’s night win at Canandaigua Speedway, Mike Welch ended the second week in June with a two-day sweep claiming victory in the Street Stock division here at Weedsport Sunday night.

Wayne Ellison led the field to green for the 20 lap feature, but the #18 quickly surrenders his lead to the #00 with just five laps recorded in the books as a perfectly tuned car of Welch appeared to be unstoppable.

However, Andy Fisk was up for the challenge aboard the #33 as he made his way from the back of the field to come knocking on the rear end of Welch with just five laps to go. As the duo went head to head around the 3/8 miler, Fisk took his shot at the lead going to the outside into to turns 3 and 4 seconds before the checkered flag waved; yet, Welch proved to be too much as he claimed victory for the second time this weekend. Top Five: Mike Welch, Andy Fisk, Nick Rizzo, Dave Pope, and Chris Fisher

BattleKarz

After leading the entire BattleKarz feature, Bill Unger was headed around turns 3 and 4 looking to claim yet another victory here at Weedsport Sunday night; but, literally seconds before the checkered flag could be waved, the #13z of Zack Petrie squeezed around the outside lane of Unger to stealing the win away from the current leader. Top Five: Zack Petrie, Bill Unger, Nick Werner, Bill Werner, and Karl Werner.
