Jimmy Phelps Brings Down the House in Weedsport!

Weedsport, NY - It was an explosive night of racing Sunday night at Cayuga County Fair Speedway as the World Famous Trailer Race left a path of destruction around the 3/8 mile track. Jimmy Phelps aboard the #99j kept Matt Sheppard and Cousin Ryan Phelps wanting more in Sunday night’s 35 lap feature as he sailed into victory lane for the second time this season.

Big Block Modifieds

All twenty six cars entered into Sunday’s Big Block division made it to the big dance as Eric Fisher led the field to green flag racing. From the start it seemed Fisher favored the outside groove as he held of the advances of rookie Big Block driver Timmy Currier currently running in second.

A caution brought out in lap 8 gave Jeff Brownell Jr, currently running in fourth, the opportunity he was looking for as he jumped two spots instantly at the restart. Brownell couldn’t be slowed down as the car continued to pick up speed with every circuit completed around the track. Two laps later, Brownell would silence Fisher once and for all as the #29 Xtreme Lubricants ride assumed the lead position. As Brownell began separating himself from the field, Ryan and Jimmy Phelps began tracking down the leader.

Halfway thru the feature, Brownell found himself weaving in and out of traffic as the Phelps duo looked to gain some ground on the leader. By lap 24, “the Rocket” Phelps was knocking on the back door of Brownell with cousin Jimmy inches behind. Seconds later, the trio found themselves rubbing paint going into the front straightaway with Brownell getting the brunt of the punishment. With a rear flat tire, the Xtreme Lubricants #29 would say goodbye to the top spot as Jimmy Phelps came out on top.

As the field regrouped Matt Sheppard, Steve Paine, and Alan Johnson concluded the Top Five with ten laps to go. Despite the heavy hitters lining up behind the #99j, Jimmy Phelps wasn’t about to be slowed down as he ricocheted around the ring, cruising into victory lane by nights end. Top Five: Jimmy Phelps, Matt Sheppard, Ryan Phelps, Steve Paine, and Alan Johnson

Sportsman Modified

Steve Gray started the night rounding out the Top Five as Dave Marcuccilli aboard the #M1 took the lead on lap one of the 25 lap feature from pole sitter Rob Richmond Jr. Within two laps of the feature, Gray had already worked his way up to second best as Marcuccilli opened up a considerable lead on the field.

A caution ten laps later brought the crowd to their feet as Marcuccilli and Gray went head to head for the number one spot. As Marcuccilli exploited the outside groove, Gray liked nothing better than to stay down low as they went wheel to wheel going into turn three. Marcuccilli would hold onto the lead once more but the next time the pair would go wheel to wheel into turn three, Marcuccilli wouldn’t fair as well.

As the duo exited turn four, Marcuccilli found himself greeting the outside retaining wall with just a little over five laps to go,  giving Gray all the room he need to take home the lead spot. Top Five: Steve Gray, Dave Marcuccilli, Tom Juhl, Chris Hile, and Marcus Dinkins

Street Stocks

From the word go Dave Mannise was looking to go one place… Victory Lane!! Starting behind pole sitter Wayne Ellison in second, the #8 was quick to exchange position as he assumed the lead spot going into the lap 2.

Mannise would sit comfortably in front of the pack as Mike Welch and Ellison entered into a heated battle for second best. The battle would take the duo to the back of the pack by lap 9 as Welch got into the back end of Ellison, bringing out the second caution of the night.  As two of the fastest cars headed to the back of the pack, Nate Peckham found himself in second at the restart.

With Peckham knocking on his rear bumper, Mannise kicked it into high gear for the remaining 11 circuits shutting down every avenue the #90 attempted. As the checkered flag waved, Mannise would keep his number one spot as Welch who started dead last on lap 9 had worked his way into the third finishing spot. Top Five: Dave Mannise, Nate Peckham, Mike Welch, Chris Fisher, and Bubba Burnell

Pure Stox

It was a green to checkered flag win for Jim Cronin in the Pure Stox division as the #3 shut down the advances of Ransomville hot shot Alex Morris in the #36. Father and son, Mike and Marc Minutolo would go wheel to wheel halfway thru the feature for third with the Marc giving his dad quite the Father’s Day present, passing him with six to go.

However, Dad would have the last laugh finishing the night out in second behind hot shoe Cronin as both Marc Minutolo and Morris ended the night earlier than expected due to mechanical woes. Results: Jim Cronin, Mike Minutolo, Eric Chapman, Larry Taylor, Rob Comfort, Alex Morris, Marc Minutolo
