Jimmy Phelps Likes What He Sees in Victory Lane

Weedsport, NY – In a night full of flips, spins, burnouts, and twists Cayuga County Fair Speedway fan’s witnessed a night jam-packed with action as the Big Block Modifieds, Sportsman Modifieds, Street Stocks, BattleKarz, and Mod Lites take to the stage in an epic battle for supremacy.

Big Block Modifieds

In a caution ridden night for the Big Block Modifieds, 27 Modifieds would enter into race action but only 12 drivers would complete the night on the lead lap as a harrowing accident on the front stretch just nine laps in sent some of the night’s heavy hitters including Alan Johnson and Justin Haers into the pits for good.

Tim Currier took advantage of his pole position getting out to a marginal lead within the opening circuits of the 35 lap feature as Shannon Whaley and Paul Habeck follow closely behind. After a caution from Ryan Phelps hitting the exterior wall, Whaley capitalized on a two by two restart relinquishing the lead spot from Currier before the two crossed the flag stand. However, moments later Whaley would watch is lead spot slip by, as a nudge from Currier cutting into the inside lane sent Whaley sideways with more victims to follow.

Alan Johnson, currently sitting in top five positioning would take the brunt of the wreck as the Doctor tumbled over top Whaley, landing upright but with a broken front end. As the wreckage was cleared and action finally kicked back into battle, the #37c of Eric Fisher captured the lead with Currier in second and Sean Beardsley in third. Ten laps remained in the Spano Paving 35 Sunday night but that was all the time Jimmy Phelps needed aboard the #98h rocket ship, as the Baldwinsville native cleared Currier from his second place seat slingshot ting around turn 2. Looking to catch up to Fisher, Phelps put pedal to the metal going wheel to wheel with the #37c five laps later.

Phelps would end the night in the number spot as Matt Sheppard finished in second 5.6 seconds behind the leader. Top Five: Jimmy Phelps, Matt Sheppard, Eric Fisher, Danny Johnson, and Jeff Brownell Jr

Sportsman Modifieds

It was a family affair on Sunday night’s Sportsman Modified Spano Paving 25 as Jimmy Spano Jr recited the famous four words “Gentleman Start Your Engines,” sending the 14 Sportsman drivers into green flag racing. His dad and fellow Sportsman driver Jim Spano started the night on the pole and wasn’t planning on letting go of it as he led the entire 25 circuits despite multiple restarts.

As Spano comfortably piloted around the 3/8 miler the #19w of Justin Wright was clearly hard at work, advancing through the field passing the #17 of Marcus Dinkins for third. Circuits later, Ben Wheeler swapped a few words with the exterior wall of turn four extinguishing Spano’s half straightaway lead as the boys lined up for the restart. When action resumed, Spano once again secured his top position as Wright and the #11n of Ricky Newton began sparring for runner up positioning.

With less than five to go, Wright and Newton exchanged pleasantries in turn 2 with Newton the victor, but Wright wasn’t willing to settle for third best as the #19w came back with a vengeance in turn four just two laps later to muscle his way back into second. Nevertheless, as Wright and Newton exhausted their efforts in capturing second, the #JV1 of Spano had no problem cruising into victory lane where a very anxious son waited for his dad! Top Five: Jim Spano, Justin Wright, Steve Gray, Ricky Newton, Dave Marcuccilli

Street Stocks

With ten circuits recorded in Sunday night’s Street Stock feature, Andy Fisk aboard his electric blue #33 ride clearly had control of the remaining seven competitors as the eight cars richoceted around the 3/8 miler. But like a bad dream, the #57b of Bubba Burnell wrestled into second after stealing the spot from Chris Fisher with just five laps to go.

And as Fisk maintained a half straightaway lead on the pack, Burnell was coming strong with a full head of stream looking to spoil Fisk’s fortune. As the white flag flew, Fisk had enough room to run with as the #33 sailed into victory lane leaving Burnell and Mike Welch to settle for a top three finish! Top Five: Andy Fisk, Bubba Burnell, Mike Welch, Nate Peckham, and Nick Rizzo

Mod Lites

Andrew Schartner aboard the #9 mod lite led the fourteen car field into green flag racing on Sunday nights 15 lap feature. Numerous cautions would fly within the first five laps of the feature and despite the #9’s attempts to stay atop, the #17 of Gary Jeffries and #811 of Dan Williams had other plans for Schartner as the duo enveloped the leader going into turn three, relegating Schartner to third within seconds.

From there, it was up to Williams and Jeffries to decipher who would reign supreme by feature’s end as the duo swapped positions throughout the remaining circuits leaving the leader to be decided by photo finish! An inside move going into turn four proved to be just what Williams needed as the #811 slid into first just in time to take the checkered flag from Williams. Top Five: Dan Williams, Gary Jeffries, Andrew Schartner, Rick Donovan, and Ricky Yelle Jr.

BattleKarz

Despite numerous attempts to break into the winner’s circle at Cayuga County Fair Speedway, Bruce Unger revisited victory lane this season with a dominating performance in the BattleKarz division. Within the opening circuits of the 20 lap feature Unger quickly gained control of the field, capturing the checkered flag with little to no challenge from the twelve car field.
