Johnson Brothers Sweep the Double Features at Cayuga

Weedsport, NY-  It was a night jam-packed with action as the Big Block Modifieds and Street Stocks would take to the stage for two features on Sunday Night at Cayuga County Fair Speedway along with the Sportsman Modifieds, BattleKarz, and Mod Lites. Brothers Alan and Danny Johnson had quite the family affair on Sunday, sweeping the Big Block Modified features!

Big Block Makeup

Shannon Whaley led the Big Block Modifieds into green flag racing action Sunday night as Tim Currier and Derrick Podsiadlo rounded out the positions two and three. A caution flag thrown on lap four would send the top three positions into a frenzy as the Doctor, Danny Johnson, sneaks by Shannon Whaley for the lead spot as Jeff Brownell Jr and Alan Johnson follow suit, to complete the top three positions.

By lap 11, Matt Sheppard had worked his way past Whaley to reside in the fourth spot as Brownell tried to track down the Doctor from behind. With every lap’s completion Johnson worked his way around the 3/8 miler despite Brownell’s efforts to steal away the spotlight. Brownell would get one last chance to challenge Johnson before the checkered flag fell as a caution comes out with eight to go.

Nevertheless, the Doctor proved to be too much for the #29 of Brownell, landing in Victory Lane moments later. Brother Alan Johnson would finish the night out behind Brownell with Sheppard and Whaley rounded out the Top Five.

Street Stock Makeup

Nate Peckham picked up where he left off at Canandaigua Speedway Saturday night as the #90 of Peckham put together yet another dominant run during Sunday night’s Street Stock feature Sunday night at Cayuga County Fair Speedway.

From start to finish, the #90 proved to be too much for the remaining six Street Stock drivers. The real battle of the night would be for positions two and three as Chris Fisher, Dave Mannise, and Bubba Burnell all had a hand in the full throttle action. The positions wouldn’t be decided until the final moments of the feature as Fisher takes second and Mannise steals away third from Burnell in the last seconds! Top Five: Nate Peckham, Chris Fisher, Dave Mannise, Bubba Burnell, and Mike Rasbeck

Mod Lite Feature

It was a gut wrenching battle for first from the word GO! as the Mod Lites took the stage Sunday night at Cayuga County Fair Speedway. Ricky Donovan snagged the lead position from the start but the #87 of Rocco Leone and the #11 of Dan Williams wasn’t about to let Donovan have all the fun.

By lap 11, spots one, two, and three were nose to tail as it was anyone’s game for the checkered flag. Donovan continued to hold off the advance of Leone and Williams but with one to go it appeared Leone may have gotten Donovan’s number. Up until the last 100 meters, Donovan and Leone were wheel to wheel exiting turn four but the Italian Stallion squeezed by the #70 to take the lead and ultimate victory with milliseconds to spare. Top Five: Rocco Leone, Ricky Donovan, Dan Williams, Gary Jeffries, and Andrew Schartner

Street Stock Feature #2

Fireworks flew in the opening seconds of the feature as Nate Peckham and Mike Welch both loose control in turn one sending Peckham to the pits as the remaining six cars line up for the restart. Dave Mannise fires on the outside lane but Bubba Burnell is there on the low side going wheel to wheel around the 3/8 miler. Bubba takes the lead from Mannise by lap 3 but Andy Fisk aboard the #33 is coming up strong in third with Welch not far behind.

Despite the efforts of Fisk and Welch, Bubba quickly puts distance between himself and the remaining drivers taking full control of the field, landing in Victory Lane yet again at Canandaigua Speedway as Mannise takes second by a hair from Fisk. Top Five: Bubba Burnell, Dave Mannise, Andy Fisk, Mike Welch, and Nick Rizzo

Sportsman Modified Feature

Three cautions within the first three laps of racing action in the Sportsman Modified division would send pole sitter Marcus Dinkins to the pits and Alan Fink and Ricky Newton to assume the positions one and two when racing resumed.

From then on, it was all Newton as the #11 found his groove around the famed Weedsport track, passing Fink for the lead. Dave Marcuccilli currently sitting in third ousts Fink from second by lap nine with caution flags flying just moments later. On the restart, Kevin Ridley aboard the #30 Xtreme Lubricants ride follows suit, passing Fink for third as Marcuccilli tries to run down Newton.

Ten laps to go… then four laps to go, Marcuccilli does everything in his power to track down Newton going wheel to wheel heading into turns one and two, but the #M1 of Marcuccilli can’t seal Newton’s fate, as Ricky pulls across the finish line to take the checkered flag! Top Five: Ricky Newton, Dave Marcuccilli, Tom Juhl, Steve Gray, and Justin Wright.

Big Block Modified Feature #2

Eight laps into the second Big Block Modified feature of the night witnessed some of Weedsport heavy hitters go pit side as a five car pile up sidelines Larry Wight, Jimmy Phelps, Chad Homan, Rich Scagliotta, and makeup feature winner Danny Johnson.

When action resumed, the once hot footed Todd Milton looses his steam giving up his lead position to “Kid Troyer” Rob Bellinger. As Bellinger begins to build a three second lead over the competition, Alan Johnson starts working his way through the top three passing Currier on lap 11 followed by Milton for second.

The once comfortable lead Bellinger made for himself slowly dwindles away as Johnson goes to work, knocking off a full second of the #8R’s lead in one lap! With less than 15 laps to go Johnson trials Bellinger by four tenths of a second while Matt Sheppard passes Justin Haers and Milton for third in one fell swoop.

A mishap for Bellinger punching the outside wall of turn four, sending Rob and Alan Johnson wheel to wheel with the #14j of Johnson taking the lead by lap’s end. Sheppard tag along behind Johnson, passing Bellinger in a matter of seconds as the remaining laps will come down to the two all-star drivers battling it out for top positioning.

Sheppard is in hot pursuit of the #14j with five laps to go as the duo are literally separated by inches but Sunday night was all about the Johnson brothers as Alan finishes out the night in Victory Lane for a Johnson brother sweep at Cayuga County Fair Speedway. Top Five: Alan Johnson, Matt Sheppard, Justin Haers, Rob Bellinger, and Todd Milton

BattleKarz

In the opening circuits of the Pick-N-Pull 20 BattleKarz feature, Bill Unger charges to the inside challenging Barb Amidon for the two spot as the #47 of Nick Werner leads. Unger takes second from Amidon and when Werner gets wide on two, Unger is there going wheel to wheel with Werner.

The pair separates themselves from the field but a caution comes out on lap 7. The restart proves to be victorious as Unger takes the lead on restart and continues to lead until the checkered flag waves. Top Five: Bill Unger, Nick Werner, Jeremy Werner, William Werner, and Dave Nageldinger

DON’T FORGET! Next week at Cayuga County Fair Speedway is the Big Block/Small Block Shootout as the first three Small Block that cross the finish line will be awarded with a $125/$75/$50 Bonus! PLUS – Sportsman Modifieds take to the track for double features in addition to the Street Stocks, BattleKarz, and World Famous Boat Race. Racing begins at 7pm with Pits opening at 4pm and Grandstands at 5pm… Tickets are $12 for Adults, $10 for Seniors, $5 for Kids (10-14yrs), and Children 9 and under are FREE!
